Tips for writing poetry!

Hello, Lovely Soul Drop!!

How are you doing? Today I want to give you 5 tips to start writing poetry. I love writing poems because they allow me to express myself in an aesthetic way that can be both beautiful and emotive.

1. Find the emotion you wish to express!! Poetry is like magic, you need to channel a feeling in order for it to work. If you’re not feeling anything too strongly you can write about being numb or you can search for movies, songs, pictures, that inspire you.

2. Choose a structure! Poetry has different types of poems and structures. Investigate them before starting your project. Find out the diverse ways you can create a poem, read about their elements, and choose the one you like the best. A good exercise is to practice different kinds to improve your skills.

3. If you’re going to write free verse, don’t focus too much on rhyming!! Poems don’t have to rhyme. Just let the words flow and you’ll be surprised with what you can actually do!

4. Read other people’s poems. This might seem obvious, but the more you read the things you wish to write the better skills you’ll have when you face that blank page. Take it as gathering tools for when you want to write!

5. Have fun! Writing genres like poetry is emotional, you have to enjoy it. Otherwise, why are you doing it? If you start stressing yourself too much or judging too harshly each word you write you’ll start being terrified of that blank page. That’s not the goal of poetry! We already have too much stress to add to our practice some more. Let go, enjoy, you’ll improve with practice. If you find out you don’t like poetry, then that’s alright!! Not everything is meant for everyone.
